1st Tattoo – Things You Need to Know

When getting your first tattoo, you will be both terrified and excited. Communicate everything with your artist and get all of your questions answered.

1. Prices vary depending on size. Most shops have a shop minimum. Color typically cost more than black tattoos. DON’T go bargain hunting. If someone is willing to do your tattoo for $15 …. somethings not right. Your tattoo will be on your body for life so think of it as investment. Good artists are worth the money. Death and Taxes Tattoos do occasionally have “flash sales” where you pick a pre-drawn design for a discounted price.

2. You can be allergic to tattoo ink. It’s rare but ink allergies and allergic reactions to the prep and aftercare process can happen. People with sensitive skin can have a reaction to the process that cleans and sterilizes the skin. Ensure you follow the artists aftercare instructions.

3. Check us out beforehand. Death and Taxes is a professional business which holds a Body Art Establishment License issued by the City and County of Denver. Additionally, all of our artists hold a Body Art License which is regulated by the Board of Health. Our shop is regularly inspected by the Department of Public Health. We ensure our shop is spotless.

4. Follow our artists on Instagram and check out their work. Our artists specialize in different tattoo styles so pick one that you like. Read our reviews on Google – we are a 5 star shop.

5. Schedule a free consultation. Work with your artist to design your tattoo. Our artists are very talented and love what they do. You will approve the design before they apply it.

6. Our artists will ensure you feel comfortable. We want you to have a great experience.

7. Bigger tattoos can take more than one session to complete. Larger designs or ones with a lot of color can take multiple sessions to finish. Bigger designs with a lot of detail or color also cost more.

8. Don’t get inked before your beach vacation. Tattoos take at least two weeks to heal. You won’t be able to swim since pool chemicals and ocean bacteria are bad for a healing tattoo. You will also need to avoid direct sunlight, even healed tattoos are sensitive to UV rays.

9. Have fun getting your tattoo but if your drunk, high or sick … please reschedule.

10. You may need to have to get your tattoo touched up. Tattoos fade over time, no matter how well you treat them, because your skin is always shedding new layers. Tattoos fade faster when exposed to sunlight.

11. Disclaimer: getting a tattoo will never not hurt. The pain depends on the tattoo placement.  Pain tolerance differs for each person, but generally, tattoos placed right over bones tend to hurt the most. It will itch afterward, DON’T scratch it.

12. Follow our aftercare instructions.
